Choo is also the first Indian to end the season with an on-base percentage of .400 or best, finishing at .401. The most recent Tribe hitter in that club was Manny Ramirez (.457 in 2000).
On the actual playing field, Rodriguez had just one hit for the third straight game, making him 3-for-11 in the series with the Chicago sale jerseys. As for the rest of the Yankees, they lost their chance to salvage a win in Chicago, as a Mariano Rivera blown save led to a 6-5 12 inning loss.
Cleveland scored in the second on a fielder’s choice by Trevor Crowe and a fielding error by White Sox starter Edwin Jackson, Crowe stole his 20th base of the season but was left stranded. Crowe’s 20 stolen bases gives Cleveland two with 20 steals. He joins Shin-Soo Choo.
Brad Ziegler finished the year with a 3.26 ERA, but that number doesn’t tell an honest truth. Ziegler struggled, taking a bullpen-high seven losses on the year, and his strikeout-to-walk ratio was downright mediocre: he struck out only 41 batters in 60 2/3 innings, while walking 28 batters. Putting that many batters on base with a free pass is a big problem for a reliever.
Arizona is 6-4 in its last 10 games and just a half a game behind San francisco in the NL West. The Diamondbacks continue to be one of the biggest surprises this season with a record of 39-32. They are 17-17 on the road and 22-15 at home.
The Giants averaged 27.1 putouts, the Tigers averaged 26.7 and the Pirates averaged 26.1. The team with the least number of putouts was the Cubs, Orioles, Nationals, Indians, Diamondbacks, Athletics, and Pirates.
Replays on television showed that the ball landed a few rows in fall territory. The umpires working that game didn’t get a chance to see that, though, because of Major League Baseball not having any replay system institutionalized. In the long run the loss didn’t hurt the Tribe. The Indians are headed to the playoffs as AL Central Division champs.
Choo, who reached the .300 mark in batting with a 1-for-3 game on Saturday, sat out the game on Sunday. He becomes the only Tribe hitter since 1901 to bat .300, hit 20 home runs and steal 20 bases in back-to-back seasons. The only other Indians to turn that feat but not in back-to-back seasons were Roberto Alomar in 1999 and 2001 and Joe Carter in 1986.
